Where Ideas Stay Longer Than Planned

Notes from Watching People Build Things
One of my favourite things about Garden Lovers has nothing to do with the menu.
It is watching what happens around the tables.
Over the years, I have seen people come here for countless reasons.
A quick coffee.
A client meeting.
A catch-up between colleagues.
A presentation review.
A brainstorming session.
What fascinates me is how often those plans change.
A meeting scheduled for an hour stretches into an entire afternoon.
A quick coffee turns into lunch.
Lunch quietly becomes another coffee.
And somewhere in between, something meaningful happens.
Ideas begin to take shape.
A Front Row Seat to Creation
Running Garden Lovers has given me an unexpected privilege — a front row seat to people's journeys.
I have watched entrepreneurs sketch business plans on napkins.
Startup founders spend months refining ideas that eventually became real businesses.
Consultants preparing for presentations.
Marketing teams debating campaign directions.
Writers working on manuscripts chapter by chapter.
One guest spent so much time writing here that eventually he told us his book had practically been written amongst the plants.
That remains one of my favourite compliments.
Not because he wrote the book here.
But because he felt comfortable enough to create here.
Sometimes They're Even Planning Their Own Café
One thing that always makes me smile is when people come here to discuss hospitality businesses.
Future cafés.
Restaurants.
Cloud kitchens.
Food concepts.
Interior ideas.
Menu plans.
Brand names.
Sometimes I overhear conversations about locations, recipes, customer experiences and design ideas.
And I quietly laugh to myself.
Because they are discussing how to build their dream café while sitting inside ours.
There is something beautifully circular about that.
Perhaps every creative space inspires another.
The Food Finds Its Way Into the Conversation
What I have learned over the years is that creative work rarely follows a schedule.
Neither does good food.
The morning may begin with coffee and a Burrata Tartine.
A colourful Beetroot Salad arrives while someone explains a business model.
A Broccoli Labneh Bowl appears during a discussion about branding.
By lunchtime, handmade pasta is being shared across the table.
The Ricotta & Spinach Ravioli.
The Wild Grove Mushroom Fettuccine.
A Burrata Pesto Spaghetti that nobody planned on ordering but everybody ends up tasting.
The conversation continues.
The laptops remain open.
Ideas move forward.
Nobody seems particularly interested in rushing.
The food never takes centre stage.
It simply becomes part of the rhythm of the day.
A bite between thoughts.
A pause between decisions.
A reason to stay a little longer.
Why Creative People Keep Returning
I don't think people return because of Wi-Fi.
Or because they need a place to sit.
They return because certain environments help us think differently.
The greenery softens the day.
The pace slows.
The pressure eases.
The mind has room to wander without losing focus.
And that space is often where the best ideas appear.
When I look around Garden Lovers today, I see more than guests.
I see people building things.
Companies.
Books.
Projects.
Partnerships.
Dreams.
And occasionally, future cafés.
Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
